COMIC-CON: Preview of ScriptPhD.com Coverage

Ahhhhhh Comic-Con! That great gala of gathering geeks. Nowhere else do you see grown men ask where the line is for the unicorn forest, feel out of place if you’re not dressed like a superhero, hear “Maus” and “Ghost World” referred to with hushed, reverent awe as “the classics” or witness a panel moderator pick a question from “the Wookie in the back… no the other one… behind the Klingon.” What started in 1969 as a small, impromptu conclave of comic book artists and fans has grown into one of the largest fan conventions in the world, with last year’s Con attracting over 150,000 devotees. Content has also expanded far beyond the graphic arts world to include must-see sneak previews and first looks of upcoming films, television programs, video games and novels. This year, tickets sold out faster than ever, but if you just missed out or couldn’t attend, fear not. Armed with a press pass and a vat of Purell (sadly, a Tyvek suit wasn’t available), Ye Olde ScriptPhD will circumnavigate through a sea of humanity to bring you exclusive wall-to-wall, behind-the-scenes coverage all four days. Click “continue reading” to see our tentative schedule and coverage.

Planned coverage includes:
•Motion Comics: Graphic Novel Storytelling in the Digital Age. Panelists include Gregory Noveck, Paul Levits, Dave Gibbons (of Watchmen fame!), Paul Dini and more.

•Mad Science: The Science Behind Science Fiction. Joint Discovery Magazine and National Academy of Sciences panel to include astronomer Phil Plait, Jamie Paglia, Kevin Grazier, Jane Espenson and writers from Fringe.

Friday (Day 2)

Special note: Friday is Official Star Wars Day at Comic-Con. You know what that means… light sabers! That’s right, folks. We are planning on counting all the light sabers that we see and posting an official ScriptPhD.com Light Saber Count that evening.

Planned coverage includes:
Farscape: 10th Anniversary Panel. Panelists include Brian Henson, Rockne O’Bannon, Ben Browder, and Claudia Black
Flash Forward, ABC’s explosive new sci-fi show. Panelists include the show’s stars and writers/executive producers
Big Bang Theory: Panelists include executive producers and series stars.
Bones: Panelists include showrunner Hart Hanson and stars Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz
•Graphic Novels: Moderator Tom Spurgeon talks to the modern superstars of graphic novels.
•TV Guide Hot List: TV Guide magazine previews the hottest fall television and looks at the superstars of the trade, in front of the camera and behind the scenes.
The Cartoonist: A special evening screening of the documentary The Cartoonist, a profile of Jeff Smith’s creation of the epic comic book Bone.

Saturday (Day 3)

Planned coverage includes:
Lost’s epic final Comic-Con panel. Guests include Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse. You don’t want to miss this! Every year, these guys go out of their way for fans.
Futurama!: Panel will include stars and executive producers from FOX, who will decide the show’s fate live from Comic-Con.
True Blood: Panel will include creator Alan Ball and show’s stars Anna Paquin, Stephen Moyer and more.
MythBusters: Panel of this terrific offbeat British science program will discuss their use of science to determine the truth behind urban legends.

Sunday (Day 4)

After all that mayhem, are you ready for even more? A relatively laconic last day will have coverage of:
Dr. Who: Television’s longest-running sci-fi series brings together a panel with actor David Tennant, writer/executive producer Russel T Davies, director Euros Lyn, and more.
•Women of Marvel. It was the most talked-about, explosive panel at last year’s Comic-Con and this year they’re back… women from every discipline at Marvel Comics give their impression of what it’s like to work in the comics industry today.
Supernatural: Screening and Q&A with stars and executive producers.

*****************************

Peppered throughout our in-depth coverage of essential panels will be talent interviews, surprise guests, press room scoop, and reports from the all-important convention floor, providing sneak peaks of video games (Wii, XBox 360), comics, network and studio booths, and more!

Remember: if you’re not following us on Twitter or on our Facebook page, you’re not getting the full ScriptPhD.com experience. We will supplement our web coverage with breaking Tweets and post comprehensive Comic-Con pictures on Facebook.

As a special treat, we will end each day’s coverage with the ScriptPhD.com Costume of the Day. Here’s a couple of my favorites from last year:

The PIckwick Papers: Dominatrix Edition

Excuse me, ma’am, but the Unicorn Forest has free hugs! I can’t wait for all of your updates. I’m glad you’re going to Burn Notice, too, as I will have to miss that one to stalk someone.

    What a fantastic event!

As a comic and also science fiction/fantasy fan for over 50 years I would just love to attend.

Unfortunately I live in Canberra, Australia and can’t get away at this time. Still they tell me the 2010 World Science Fiction Convention will be in Melbourne, so I will not miss that.

In more recent years I’ve written a lot of Marvel fan fiction:

and also been published in the US as a science fiction writer:

David, we promise to provide as much in-depth coverage as possible for those missing the event!

How fun!! Sounds like ScriptPhD.com needs to make a little trip to the Land of Oz next year. :-)
